Snow to Run for Reelection to BOS

Freshman Board of Visitors member Duane Snow is running for a second term, Molly Balkenbush reports for NBC-29. The Samuel Miller Republican promises to continue to advance transportation projects, expand the physical size of county schools, and get internet access for the whole of his district. The election is in November.

Lake Monticello Standoff Ends Peacefully

23-year-old James Kardos was arrested early this morning, ending a nine-hour standoff at Lake Monticello. A suspect in a domestic assault in Charlottesville, the city resident fled to Lake Monticello, where he holed up in his mother’s home, surrounded by police, the street’s homes evacuated. He fired a gunshot at one point, to no apparent effect, and police later retaliated with a no-more-effect stun grenade. At 1 AM police entered the home and arrested him, and he’s been taken back to Charlottesville and jailed. This is the most excitement at Lake Monticello in a long time.

Dumler Pleads Guilty to Sexual Battery

Supervisor Chris Dumler pleaded guilty to sexual battery this morning, Courteney Stuart writes for The Hook, with the 27-year-old Democratic official pleading to a 12-month sentence, suspended to 60 days, liable to only serve 30, just on the weekends. He was arrested on charges of forcible sodomy in October, and faced accusations from a second victim just last week, dating to 2006.

One has to imagine that this will be followed by Dumler’s resignation from the Board of Supervisors. It’s tough to see how somebody can plead guilty to a sex crime and remain in elected office. If he hasn’t already decided to step down, he’s bound to come under a great deal of pressure to do so, and soon.

Norris Won’t Seek Reelection

City Councilor Dave Norris will not seek a third term, he writes on his blog. Both his seat and freshman Kristin Szakos’s are up for election this year. He writes that “eight years is enough” and that “it’s time for some new blood on City Council.” Nobody has yet announced their candidacy, though that may be because nobody wanted to run against the incumbents. The election is in November.

Guy Walks into Kroger with an AR-15

Some jackass strolled into the Kroger on Hydraulic carrying an AR-15 today, the Daily Progress reports, leading to at least one person wisely fleeing the store and calling 911. Police quickly arrived and detained the 22-year-old, before releasing him since, in Virginia, there’s nothing illegal about strolling around a grocery store carrying an assault weapon. Police figure this was an open carry demonstration. This is a thing, wherein people who know that it is legal to openly carry will go into crowded public places while carrying guns, on the theory that people will eventually stop being terrified and get used to this as a reasonable behavior. Basically, First Amendent : Westboro Baptist Church :: Second Amendment :: these jackasses. Anyhow, Kroger tossed the guy off their property and told him not to come back, since there’s nothing illegal about throwing a dangerous jerk off of your private property.
