Slutzky Proposes TDR

Board of Supervisors member David Slutzky made an interesting proposal early last week, I’ve just discovered upon returning from a week’s vacation. He’d like to see the county allow transfer of development rights from rural property owners to growth-area property owners, meaning folks who live out in the country can sell their right to build more houses on their land to folks who already own land in growth areas. It’s a free market approach to shaping growth, requiring that nobody lose any property rights. Not everybody’s thrilled with the proposal, but this may well prove to be the most popular short-term solution to our growth problem.

Unpasturized Apple Cider?

CiderIt’s that time of year when thoughts turn to picking apples and buying cider. Though a trip to Carter’s Mountain makes for a fine afternoon, their cider is, sadly, pasteurized. Does anybody know of an area orchard that sells unpasteurized cider?

New NBC 29 Website

NBC 29 appears to have launched a new version of their website. If any improvements accompany this update, I can’t detect them. They should win some kind of an award for their HTML’s 255 validation errors, which is the the most staggeringly bad code that I have encountered in thirteen years of website development. The video is Windows Media, the URLs are lousy, the search engine doesn’t particularly work and, bafflingly, there’s still no RSS feed. Party like it’s 1999!

If I ran a local media outlet, I’d just license Ellington and be done with it.

Student Slain, Suspect Dead

UVa graduate student Elizabeth Hafter has been missing since Friday, and a body fitting her description has turned up at Humpback Rocks. And a 37-year-old Georgia man has been shot dead by Florida police shortly after driving Hafter’s car off the road, concluding a multi-state killing spree as he fled from Georgia to Virginia and then south to Florida. Media General News Service presents the story as it’s known now, though presumably there’s much still to emerge.

Spivey Accused of Improper Sexual Contact

Well-known and well-liked CHS choral director Jonathan Spivey has been accused of improper sexual contact with a student, Lisa Ferrari reports for CBS 19. The accusation was reported to the school by the student, and then reported to police. The police searched the school for evidence a week ago, and he has not reported to work all week, presumably indicating a suspension during the investigation. Spivey also serves as minister of music at Mount Zion Baptist Church. No further details have been made public.
