Alb. Officer Wins Free-Speech Case

Anonymous writes: This story in the progress shows hows the goverment tries to limit speech and how they are wrong, again.

US District Judge Michael has ruled that the county’s gag order against Officer Karl Mansoor was violated his rights to free expression. The agreement prevented Mansoor from criticizing the county as a condition of his employment. Adrienne Schwisow has the story in today’s Progress.

What a waste of tax dollars! I wonder if a laywer or someone familiar could tell us how much a case like this would cost to prosecute and does Albemarle have to pay for Officer Mansoor lawyer as well?

    Thanks in advance.

Considering the initiative to erect a Free Speech Monument near the downtown mall I hope that you will re-characterize your “waste of tax dollar” statement.

The waste is that this trial had to happen. The Albemarle goverment position was to limit speech. I’m against that. My point was WHY this went to trial and wasted money. It should never have gotten that far. I think we are in agreement not opposition.

There are currently no plans (that I am aware of) for city funds to be spent on the creation or the maintenance of the Monument.

It sure seems like there are quite a few pretty serious problems within the county police department. There’s this, which is reprehensible on the part of the police administrators, officers being put on administrative leave for allegedly abusing custodial suspects, officers being taken off the school beat for allegedly mishandling students, and a whole lot of silence from management.

Maybe in addition to an oversight committee new departmental leadership is needed. The problems seem to be institutional, not isolated. Where is the Board of Supervisors in all this?

The city is too busy paying for $30,000 christmas trees, and funding “Junk Yard Wars” inspired art top worry about national monuments..

This comment seems to imply that the city is spending money on the project:

“Considering the initiative to erect a Free Speech Monument near the downtown mall I hope that you will re-characterize your ‘waste of tax dollar’ statement.”

So that’s what I was responding to.
