UVa Students Return, K-12 Starts

The students and their families will descend upon town this weekend, so if you want to go anywhere in town, don’t. Remember, too, that area schools start up on Monday, so expect to be stuck behind buses if you’ve got a morning commute.

My morning commute extends from my bedroom to my living room, so I figure I’ll be OK.

Thursday and Friday were not as bad as I had anticipated. I went to the corner three times, mostly for work-related reasons, and it was not as crowded with people-traffic as I had come to expect from years past.

Car traffic, on the other hand, is insane. Driving downtown at about noon on Thursday, I experienced, for the first time in my life, gridlock. On Market Street, of all places.

  • I was shocked at how bad the 29 250 intersection was on Tuesday’s rush hour. I don’t remember the traffic ever being that bad. Stop and go, stop and go.
I was delighted today to find that riding a bike between downtown and UVA is actually much faster than driving or waiting for the trolley. I sometimes wonder if gridlock is a good thing in some ways.
