Charlottesville Juneteenth Celebration

munk writes: Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in America, after Galveston, Texas declared the first such observance on June 19th, 1865. WINA reports the first Charlottesville Juneteenth celebration tomorrow at the CCTC at 999 Grove Street.

    Strange that this should be Cville’s first Juneteenth observance, considering how long the celebration has been around. Makes me suspect that the majority of the revelers will be white liberals externalizing their upper-middle class guilt complexes and patting themselves on the back for how “sensitive” they are. How titillating!!

    Caveat: I may be wrong.

    As a white, upper-middle class liberal, I have to admit I’d never heard of Juneteenth before. In looking at the Junettenth.com I don’t see that many celebratiosn in Virginia. That someone’s taken some initiative and just done it’s just fine with me.
