USA Today has a feature entitled “24 hours in the ER” that happens to be set at the UVA Medical Center. It’s meant to be a slice-of-life piece, showing what happens during a random day in a single hospital, as a way of showing what’s going on with our nation’s healthcare system.
This was my favorite!

Compassion is hard to find.
Part two of this article came out today.

There must be two UVA hospitals. One for indigent and minority folks and one for everyone else. I know a lady who had an accident and had to spend a few days in their hospital. She didn’t have health insurance, but was treated anyway. So far, so good. But when she got out she was presented with the full retail amount of a bill and given draconian payment terms. She recently lost her job and has fallen behind in the payments but they continue to pursue and harass her with the same tactics and expectations of the skankiest bill collectors out there. That’s why so many people without health insurance have to declare bankruptcy if they get sick or have an accident. But UVA Health Sciences is above reproach. Yeah, right.
