A few years ago I actually conducted my own photographic survey of the ghost signs of downtown, wanting to have a record of them in case they disappeared. I didn’t have the good sense to put them online, though now I realize I should. I love some of Duncan’s photos of downtown, some for the rich information contained within them (like this photo of the once-painted downtown silhouette sculptures and some because they’re just plain gorgeous.
Alright, here are some of ‘em, geocoded and everything.
I’ve been wondering what will happen to the motel sign at the corner of Proffit and 29N. It’s such a wonderful old rusted thing.
It finally disappeared a week or two ago, I guess. Anticipating that, I went out there a month ago and took ~150 pictures of it.
The “(No) Vacancy” and “Free Cable TV” signs are still there, though. :-)
